KUCHING: More than 1,000 participants filled the streets of Kuching with patriotic spirit during the lively 722 Walk, held in conjunction with Sarawak Day 2025.

The four-kilometre walk began at 6.30am from the grounds of the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) and concluded at Dataran Ibu Pertiwi at around 8.20am, drawing enthusiastic support from city residents.

Participants included staff from MBKS, Kuching North City Hall (DBKU), Padawan Municipal Council (MPP), along with various government agencies and local communities.

Many came draped in colours inspired by the Sarawak flag, adding a vibrant touch to the morning parade.

Among those who joined the walk were MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, DBKU Mayor Dato Hilmy Othman and MPP Chairman Tan Kai, who walked alongside the public in a show of unity, pride and simplicity to mark this meaningful day.

A key highlight of the event was the flag-raising ceremony at Dataran Ibu Pertiwi, conducted with dignity and reverence.

The event served as a symbolic gesture of respect for Sarawak’s historical struggle and its identity as a sovereign and distinct region within the Federation of Malaysia.

In a media statement, Dato Hilmy described the 722 Walk as a manifestation of solidarity and cooperation among the three main local authorities in Kuching.

"This initiative reflects our shared commitment to foster unity, strengthen state identity, and instil a sense of love and pride for Sarawak among city dwellers," he said.

He also highlighted that Sarawak Day, celebrated annually on 22 July, is not merely a historical commemoration, but a mark of respect for the struggles of the past and a source of inspiration for the state’s future progress.

"Local authorities will remain committed to organising programmes that promote patriotism, unity and urban sustainability for the well-being of the people and a brighter future for Sarawak," he added.

Sarawak Day is celebrated every 22 July to commemorate the day Sarawak gained self-governance from British colonial rule in 1963, prior to the formation of Malaysia. -UKASnews
