KUCHING: Sarawak Microelectronic Design (SMD) Semiconductor, Sarawak’s very own homegrown company, will host the Sarawak Semiconductor Syndication Session on 21 July 2025 in Kuching.
According to a statement, this session will bring together federal and state ministries and government agencies, local universities, training centres and industry players to accelerate Sarawak’s evolution into a cutting-edge semiconductor hub.
“This focused one-day workshop builds upon the launch of the Sarawak Semiconductor Strategic Framework and the Sarawak Semiconductor Roadmap 2030: Beyond Moore’s Law, officiated by the Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg at the CSA Catapult in Wales on 29 April 2025.
“Jointly organised with the Ministry for Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD) and the Ministry for International Trade, Industry and Investment (MINTRED), this initiative seeks to transform strategic vision into concrete, real action and measurable results, with Sarawak’s future generation and economic resilience in focus,” it said on Friday.
SMD Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Shariman Jamil will lead the session with an exclusive presentation of the roadmap, outlining ten strategic steps to build a complete semiconductor eco-system by 2030.
This will be followed by an insight-sharing session on the Malaysia National Semiconductor Strategy (NSS) by Collaborative Research in Engineering, Science and Technology (CREST).
Also featured in the session is a presentation on the private funding and venture capital landscape by SMD Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Shahril Anas.
According to him, this bottom-up approach has been SMD’s longstanding practice, ensuring the framework truly reflects industry needs, locally and globally, unlocking opportunities for Sarawakians.
“This syndication will turn vision into reality, fuelling Sarawak’s journey toward becoming the Silicon Nerve Centre of Asia. It’s not just ambition. It’s happening, and we want everyone to be part of it,” he explained.
During the session, Shariman will also highlight fast-growing opportunities in chip design, R&D, and advanced packaging, which are sectors poised to generate high-income jobs and stimulate long-term growth in Sarawak.
Adding to the momentum, Managing Partner of Silicon Catalyst UK, Sean Redmond, will offer insights into the UK’s semiconductor landscape, alongside representatives from the UK’s Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT).
“Participants are expected to contribute to formulating coordinated strategies that align Sarawak’s efforts with national and international objectives.
“The session’s outcomes and strategic recommendations will be formally presented to the Sarawak Premier, further enriching the Sarawak Semiconductor Strategic Framework blueprint.
“A total of 40 key players from the federal and state ministries, agencies, educational and training institutions as well as the industry players will participate in the syndication,” the statement said.
This syndication is more than just a meeting, it’s a defining moment to empower the next generation of homegrown talent, cement Sarawak’s role as a sustainable semiconductor powerhouse, and drive high-value job creation for long-term economic strength. -UKASnews
