KOTA SAMARAHAN: The reputation of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) as a destination of choice for international students was evident when nearly 200 students from various countries participated in the 2025 Chinese New Year celebration.

UNIMAS Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr. Ahmad Hata Rasit said the event was not just a celebration, but also a testament to the cultural diversity celebrated at the university, in line with the increase in the number of international students now reaching some 700 students.

"This celebration is different from the previous years because it is on a larger scale with the participation of many international students.

"This reflects the increasingly inclusive learning environment and diversity which are the main attractions of UNIMAS," he said when speaking at the UNIMAS Global Chinese New Year celebration at the DeTAR Putra Gallery on Wednesday.

He also emphasised that UNIMAS is not just an academic centre but also a platform to connect students from various backgrounds in understanding the unique Sarawakian culture.

According to him, the trend of international student enrollment at UNIMAS shows a positive increase with a target of 1,500 students by 2026.

“We want international students to not only gain knowledge but also experience the uniqueness of Sarawak for themselves. This can indirectly promote UNIMAS at the global level,” he added.

Meanwhile, he added that there are currently students pursuing their studies from bachelor’s degrees to doctoral degrees (PhD) at UNIMAS, proving their confidence in the quality of education and learning environment at the university.

Also present at the ceremony were UNIMAS Board of Directors Chairman, Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima Sulong Matjeraie, Deputy Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Kuching, Song Changhong, Consul General of the Republic of Indonesia in Kuching, Raden Sigit Witjaksono, and Consul General of Brunei Darussalam in Kuching, Sheikh Abdul Mahdani Dato Paduka Sheikh Abdul Gani. -UKASnews
