KUCHING: Sarawak remains steadfast in its commitment to upholding the principles of federalism, which form the bedrock of Malaysia's governance structure.

While at the same time, the state's dedication to defending its rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) remains resolute.

Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg, emphasised that as one of Malaysia's founding partners, Sarawak plays an essential role in maintaining a balanced distribution of power between the federal and state governments while safeguarding its autonomy.

He underscored Sarawak's determination to protect its constitutional rights, stating that these efforts are vital not only for the well-being of Sarawakians but also for ensuring the state’s ongoing contribution to the nation's prosperity.

"By defending the principles of the Federal Constitution and asserting our rights and responsibilities, Sarawak is securing its future and contributing to the collective growth of Malaysia,” said the Premier.

He made these remarks during the Gala Dinner held in conjunction with the Opening of the Sabah and Sarawak Legal Year 2025 at a local hotel on Friday.

Datuk Patinggi Abang Zohari also noted that Sarawak retains control over critical areas such as land and natural resources, while the Federal Government manages national matters, including defence and foreign policies.

This arrangement, he explained, reflects the essence of federalism, where power is shared equitably between federal and state authorities, fostering cooperative governance without any one party dominating.

"The division of responsibilities between federal and state governments ensures that both levels of authority operate in harmony, achieving common objectives for the good of the nation,” he said.

He also stressed Sarawak’s vision of a federation built on unity and diversity, where each state's unique strengths contribute to the nation's overall success.

"Our commitment to sustainable development, renewable energy, and green initiatives aligns with Malaysia's goal to become a global leader in these areas. By responsibly managing our resources and driving innovation, Sarawak aims to be a model of progress within the federation," he added.

Among the distinguished guests at the event were Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak, Tan Sri Abdul Rahman Sebli, Sarawak Secretary, Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Law, MA63 and State-Federal Relations), Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali, Attorney-General of Malaysia, Dato' Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar, Sarawak Attorney-General, Dato Sri Saferi Ali, Sabah Attorney-General, Datuk Brenndon Keith Soh, Sarawak Courts Director, Steve Ritikos, Sabah Courts Director, Marutin Pagan, President of the Advocates Association of Sarawak, Gurvir Singh Sandhu, and other prominent legal professionals. -UKASnews
