LUNDU: The Sarawak Government will continue to support shrimp farming companies that adhere to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards.
Minister of Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development, Dato Sri Dr. Stephen Rundi Utom said the companies that comply with ESG standards will have an advantage in exporting shrimp, supporting the goal of making it a key food export by 2030.
“At Rambungan Aquatic Sdn Bhd, they practice smart shrimp farming while adhering to ESG standards for the environment. So, when we achieve ESG status, we gain an edge in exporting shrimp compared to those that do not comply with ESG.
“ESG means that waste is not disposed of irresponsibly, among other things. This aligns with the concept of a circular economy.
“Of course, the government will fully support this initiative as it is the way we can secure niche markets for our shrimp exports in the future,” he said.
He spoke to the media after the Shrimp Harvesting Programme at Rambungan Aqua Life Sdn Bhd in Loba Stoh, Rambungan, here, on Wednesday.
Dato Sri Dr. Stephen Rundi added that there are still traditional farmers who use conventional methods and do not comply with ESG, though the local market prices remain relatively the same.
However, he noted that shrimp farmers who now adhere to ESG have the advantage of exporting to global markets, where there are no limitations on the scale of their operations.
He further stated that his ministry would continue to support Rambungan Aquatic Sdn Bhd in its efforts to expand shrimp farming in compliance with ESG standards.
“This support will help create similar approaches to shrimp farming in other areas, positioning Sarawak to export larger quantities of shrimp.
“The government will provide as much support as possible, including technical advice, financial assistance, and more, especially for essential aspects at the early stages,” he added.
Currently, Rambungan Aquatic Sdn Bhd has been granted permission to use 297 hectares of land for shrimp farming.
The company is a joint venture between the Sarawak State Farmers’ Organisation (PPNS) and Sea Horse Corporation Sdn Bhd.
