KUCHING: The Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) project under the Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS) initiative faces challenges in implementation, including operational readiness, public perception, regulatory frameworks, and the need to attract and develop skilled local talent.
To address these gaps, Sarawak Metro has initiated the Socio-Economic Enhancement Development (SEED) Programme, which includes the Young Talent Programme (YTP).
According to Chief Executive Officer of Sarawak Metro, Ts. Mazli Mustaffa, apprentices undergo a 2-year attachment with experts and are absorbed into the company as skilled professionals under Sarawak Metro’s Young Talent Programme (YTP).
“Through the Centre of Excellence, Sarawak Metro collaborates with universities and TVETs to develop specialised modules and training programs tailored to the ART system's needs,” he said.
He said this in a Juh Randau session produced by the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS) on Thursday.
Furthermore, Mazli noted that the localisation of ART operations is a key focus, with 33 out of the 38 ART units being assembled locally at the plant in Demak Laut, fostering skills and creating jobs for locals.
Public perception poses a challenge, as many Sarawakians are accustomed to private vehicle use, but efforts are being made to promote the ART system’s benefits, such as convenience, eco-friendliness, and safety.
“Changing the mindset of Sarawakians, who are used to driving their own cars and parking conveniently in front of shops, is a significant challenge in promoting the ART system.
“By raising awareness, we highlight the benefits of the ART system, such as its convenience, eco-friendliness and the safety of hydrogen fuel cell technology, is essential to gaining public confidence,” he added.
Looking ahead, Sarawak Metro plans to expand ART lines to improve connectivity.
The first phase of the KUTS project includes the Blue Line (Rembus to Hikmah Exchange), the Red Line (Kuching Sentral to Pending), and the Green Line (Pending to Damai Central), with future developments set to include a Yellow Line connecting Batu Kawa.
