BEKENU: The much-anticipated Regatta Subis, Sungai Sibuti @ Bekenu 2024, is set to significantly boost the tourism landscape in Subis, a district brimming with natural and cultural attractions.
Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg, highlighted Subis as a prime destination, featuring stunning beaches, the world-renowned Niah Caves—a UNESCO World Archaeological Heritage Site—and a wealth of local products, including exquisite handicrafts, stingless bee honey, as well as fresh agricultural and fishery produce.
"Through Regatta Subis, we aim to attract a wide range of tourists, offering them a chance to experience the vibrant, multicultural life that thrives here. This event is not just about competition on the river, it’s an opportunity for visitors to immerse themselves in the rich cultural diversity and hospitality that makes Subis a one-of-a-kind destination," he said.
His message was conveyed through the Sarawak Deputy Minister for Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development, Datuk Rosey Yunus, during the event’s grand opening on Saturday.
Datuk Patinggi Abang Zohari also announced several upcoming development initiatives for the Subis district, aimed at enhancing infrastructure and local amenities to support its growing tourism sector.
"Among the key projects are the Subis Sports Complex, the Kampung Rambai Waterfront, the Subis Community Hall, a new administrative office for the Subis District Office, and various Rural Transformation Projects (RTP) spearheaded by our local and parliamentary representatives," he added.
The Regatta Subis kicked off with great fanfare, drawing 176 entries for paddle races and 212 entries for engine races. Despite the rainy weather, large crowds gathered to witness the thrilling competitions along the river.
Visitors were also treated to a bustling marketplace, featuring stalls offering a variety of local products and delicacies.
The excitement will continue tonight, with a community stage programme showcasing performances by local artists, making the regatta a true celebration of culture and community spirit.
Also present at the opening ceremony were Bekenu Assemblyman Dato Lukanisman Awang Sauni and other distinguished guests. -UKASnews
